2012-11-15 POLICTICS

Dear all, today's our second week for the topic "POLITICS."

Most of us feel uncomfortable talking about politics here but our teacher, Abbie, always knows some ways to inspire us to come up with some great innovative ideas about any topic.

From last week, Abbie gave us several questions to think of and asked those to each other.

(1) What do you think about politics?
(2) Do people in your family talk about politics? Why or why not?
(3) If you had the chance to be the president of the USA, would you take it?
(4) If you had the change to be the president of Taiwan, would you do it?

During the first class of discussing politics, some of us thought politics was a mess and some of us didn't want to talk about it in public or with family. And some felt disappointed about what politicians have brought to our society. However, today we dug a bit deeper into this topic with a few more questions.

(1) If you could create a law, what would you do with it?
(2) What do you think about voter apathy?
(3) What could we have done if the politics were in the ideal situations that we expected?

May would like to create a law in Yilan county to forbid the use of the herbicide in order to protect our environment. And as for Jeff, he hopes to have a law to make Yilan a paradise for walkers and bicyclists.

Our first presentation was from May, she shared how our hearts work and function compared to the car with the engine. She did help us to know a lot of medical terms and next week, she might give us more tips about taking care of our hearts with some special herbs. That'll be great to know more about keeping ourselves healthy. Don't miss it next week!

Jonas introduced a dramedy movie starring Robin Williams to us and it's about the presidential election of the USA. A talk show host decided to run for the president after he received over 4 million emails of support and how he overturned the system and finally found that the result of the election was flawed. If you are interested in it, go rent it from the shop and you'd have some time to kill.

At last, Abbie shared some great ideas from those two TED videos that she sent to us. One is about why people are political apathy and the other one is "Taking the other lunch" about some tips of teaching us how to deal with someone in the opposite position.

I think politics isn't a taboo word here but we just need to be very cautious when talking about it. It's not about right or wrong. It's about that are those who are into it really working for the ideal goal "Help people live better lives?"
